Job Overview
At NB Onoya Geomatics & Construction Surveying Ltd, our goal is to provide precise, tailored surveying solutions to our clients in Canada and around the globe. Our core competencies include construction surveying for roads, buildings, airports, pipelines, oil and gas facilities, and other critical infrastructure project.
We are seeking a skilled and motivated Party Chief Land Survey Technologist to lead our surveying team in executing various projects. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in surveying practices and be proficient in utilizing CAD and GIS technologies, among others. As a Party Chief, you will be responsible for overseeing field operations, ensuring accurate data collection, and managing project deliverables while maintaining high standards of quality and safety.
Duties
- Conduct field surveys using theodolites, electronic distance-measuring equipment, total stations, GPS, and specialized equipment such as multibeam echo sounders, gyrocompasses, motion sensors, transducers, beacons, altimeters, profilers, pipe-trackers, and GNSS-integrated systems for construction survey works.
- Operate, calibrate, maintain and troubleshoot survey instruments and devices, ensuring accurate collection and recording of field survey data using various surveying equipment and technologies.
- Perform topographic, land, geodetic, engineering, construction, mining, hydrographic and offshore surveys, including subsea construction, inspection, maintenance, and repair of oil and gas facilities and assets.
- Collect, analyze, process, compute and interpret survey data to determine precise geographic locations, to produce charts, maps, operational survey reports and client-deliverables, and to QA-QC pre and post construction survey works.
- Lead and manage a team of survey technicians in the field to ensure efficient project execution; supervise and coordinate field survey activities, including drafting and technical staff.
- Train and instruct technicians, technologists, and other engineers in survey and data processing operations.
- Write field survey and final reports for clients on-site or remotely.
- Utilize CAD software to prepare detailed drawings and plans based on collected data; implement GIS technologies for effective data management and analysis.
- Maintain accurate and organized survey records, including field notes, sketches, and data files, for future reference and project documentation.
- Maintain and manage databases of geospatial and survey data, including reports.
- Supervise and manage survey and construction projects and ensure safety and quality standards on-site.
- Coordinate survey activities with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders to ensure survey requirements are met.
- Provide advisory support to clients regarding survey and construction processes, systems, and execution.
- Participate in business development activities, including building client relationships, preparing proposals, and identifying new project opportunities.
- Assist in recruiting and allocating personnel to ensure proper expertise is assigned to projects.
- Stay updated with the latest surveying techniques, technologies, and industry best practices to continuously improve surveying processes.
- Support the company’s further expansion into offshore construction and inspection survey works in Canada and internationally.
Skills
- Proven experience as a Party Chief or in a similar role within the surveying industry.
- Proficiency in operating and troubleshooting surveying equipment, including theodolites, electronic distance-measuring equipment, total stations, GPS, and specialized equipment such as multibeam echo sounders, gyrocompasses, motion sensors, transducers, beacons, altimeters, profilers, pipe-trackers, and GNSS-integrated systems for construction survey works.
- Expertise in AutoCAD, AutoChart, MicroStation, Trimble Business Center, and GIS applications such as ArcGIS, NaviPac Suite, QINSy Mapping/Terramodel, VisualSoft Suite, WoodGroup Integrity Management System, PDS200, NaviEdit and NaviModel, Fugro Survey Systems, WinINS, ROVINS, 4DNAV, Veripos Ultra DGPS System, Cathodic Protection and Field Gradient Systems.
- Strong knowledge of surveying methods, techniques, and principles as well as strong skills in data collection methodologies and database management
- Strong skills in survey data processing, reporting, and geospatial analysis.
- Excellent mathematical skills and ability to perform complex calculations related to surveying.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure accurate data collection and recording.
- Effective communication and leadership skills to lead a team and collaborate with project managers, engineers, and clients.
- Ability to work independently and make decisions in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment.
- Physical stamina and ability to work in outdoor environments and challenging terrains.
- Problem-solving and critical thinking skills to overcome obstacles and find solutions during surveys.
- Time management skills to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.
- Business acumen and ability to lead negotiations for new contracts and partnerships.
Required Qualifications
- At least 5 years work experience as as a land survey technologist/technician.
- Bachelor’s degree in Land Surveying, Geomatics, Geodetic Engineering or a related field is preferred.
- A valid driver’s license is required; additional certifications related to surveying are a plus.
